iPhone 4 Spontaneously Combusts on Plane
An investigation has been launched after an iPhone 4 burst into flames for no reason on an Australian airline flight to Sydney. The incident took place on a Regional Express Airlines flight and the phone apparently caught fire as the plane was coming in to land. Onlookers said the phone was glowing red and had thick smoke emitting from it.
The incident is being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau who have apparently taken the phone into custody. It is still not clear why the phone suddenly burst into flames, or whether there was something else going on (such as an attempted act of terrorism, with an explosive device concealed in the phone).
Terrorism seems unlikely as, while the phone has been taken into custody, nobody else has been arrested. All those who were directly involved are being interviewed to try and determine exactly what has happened.
The Australian authorities have not mentioned which iPhone model it was that exploded, but from a photo they released it seems as though it was an iPhone 4. Apple say they will be working closely with Australian authorities to try and identify the cause of the explosion, and prevent it from happening again.
This is the first time that an iPhone has exploded on an airline flight, although there have been reported incidences of iPod Nanos exploding in the past. Until they get to the bottom of the incident, maybe we should all pay attention when the flight attendants tell us to switch of our electronic gadgets while on a plane.
