I don’t like puzzle games. They frustrate me, and then I get bored. In the mean time, I suffer a brutal strike to my ego. That didn’t happen with PowerGRID. Instead, I got hooked in by the buzzing electrical noises and just how…easy it was to succeed. It’s a challenging game, but it’s not a game that you need to be terribly smart for. You have to be fast, and you have to be willing to progress through trial and error, but if that’s something you can do, you’ll probably love this game as much as I do.
The premise of PowerGRID is to connect electricity nodes to each other. If it were that easy, it wouldn’t be a game. So to make it more challenging, each node has a precise number of connections that have to be made with it. The only other rules are that no connections can cross and the whole thing has to form a kind of system. That is, they all have to be connected to the network as a whole.
There are two modes to the game – Free Play and Time Attack, which can be toggled in the settings menu from the home screen. There are also three difficulty levels – a 7×7 grid, 9×9 and 11×11. I found I whisked through the 7×7 mode in not much time at all, but the 9×9 has definitely gotten trickier, so if you start out and think this game’s too easy for you – it’s not.
The free version is amazing, and is a complete game, though there is an option to buy a beefed up version, with “thousands of additional levels” and more challenges, from the settings menu.
My only complaint with the game, and the only thing that knocks it down from a 5-star rating, is that it’s not compatible with the native music player, so you can’t listen to your music while you play. This may just be a problem for me, because when I do play puzzles, it’s to escape the stress of my chaotic life, for which music is a helpful, and almost necessary, aid, but it is something I’d like to see added in future updates.
