Another Way To Use FaceTime Over 3G

We all know FaceTime is great, and that it’s probably one of the best features of the iPhone 4 (after Retina display, and the sheer speed of the thing). However, a major downside (or upside, if you’re on a limited data contract) to this feature is that you can only use it when connected to a Wi-Fi network. Which means that FaceTime on the go sadly isn’t a reality, yet.

Or is it? Jailbroken iPhone users will be familiar with the whole host of tweaks available in Cydia which allow for VoIP over 3G – which is, voice over IP, over a 3G network. There are stacks, with the most notable being the aptly titled VoIPover3G, which tricks any Wi-Fi-requiring application into thinking its connected to a wireless network.

However, if this application doesn’t work so well on your iPhone 4, there is an alternative. FaceBreak, which is also available in Cydia, allows users to make FaceTime calls over a 3G network. The application costs $1.49, and it comes with a few added bonuses.

The tweak has recently been updated to reduce the consumption of RAM, meaning FaceBreak will put less of a strain on your iPhone. A pop-up message reminding the user that FaceBreak is activated has also been added – meaning jailbroken iPhone 4 owners won’t accidentally run up a supermassive bill by blowing their data limits on FaceTime calls over 3G.

So, if you’re looking to take FaceTime on tour, be sure to check out FaceBreak now! It’s available in Cydia for the minuscule price of $1.49. And, if you do check it out, be sure to let us know how it works for you in the comments box below. Thanks to iSpazio for spotting this.
